Four things, and the crew calls that keep me honest about all four.
The work
The whole apparatus: schedule, budget, crew, gear, locations, contingencies. One build plan everyone works from, with margin designed in on purpose.
Performance first, coverage that serves the cut. I come in with a shot list I'm willing to abandon and a plan that makes abandoning it survivable.
Original scripts and development work, from premise to a draft that a crew can actually shoot inside a real budget.
Cutting my own work and other people's. Assembly through picture lock, plus the delivery pass that gets it out the door in the right shapes.
How it runs
Margin is an engineering word. It's the room you design in on purpose, so when something goes wrong — and it will — you're not out of runway. Most productions run with none. Every job I take runs on the same three beats — trade study, build plan, debrief.

I still take crew calls — gaffer, G&E, sound, AD, script — with people I like working with. It's the fastest way I know to keep learning how a set actually runs, and it means when I'm producing I know exactly what I'm asking a department to do.
